First case of radiofrequency ablation of biliary cancer in ColombiaAugust 2022, Jesús Pérez Orozco, specialized in surgical clinical gastroenterology, completed the first case of radiofrequency ablation of a biliary tumor in Colombia, increasing the survival and quality of life of a patient with terminal biliary cancer. This procedure, according to the American Cancer Society, is a minimally invasive treatment which requires endoscopic surgery through a technique called ERCP, which is a bipolar energy technique to ablate tumors. The technique is guided by images that use electrical currents to destroy cancer cells. Two radiofrequency ablation treatments were carried out by Dr. Orozco; one case of pancreatic tumor for cure, a 60-year-old man who had a pancreatic, neuroendocrine tumor that was cured with ablation. And another of tumor bile for palliation, an 84-year-old man, who has an inoperable biliary tumor, to whom we applied radiofrequency and placed a biliary prosthesis, increasing his survival and improving his quality of life.  According to the director of the outpatient clinic, this technique is applied to improve the quality of life of the patient, since if a patient has a life expectancy of six months, after the procedure, his quality of life would increase, at least, three to six times more. The patient feels less pain, fewer cases of infection after the procedure, and the best thing is that he/she can go home the same day because it is an outpatient operation.In addition, in conversation with the health professional, he explained that Barranquilla is a pioneer, at this time, in all of South America, in advanced gastroenterology operations. “Our distributor is a Korean company called TaeWoong and the system that makes radiofrequency possible is called EUSRA™ or ELRA™, which is an endoscopic RFA electrode used for safe removal in the common bile duct under a proprietary temperature control system”, explained the specialist. Radiofrequency treatment brings great benefits to the health of cancer patients, according to Orozco._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Click to read about the benefits of innovative life-saving treatment! https://www.elheraldo.co/salud/primer-caso-de-ablacion-por-radiofrecuencia-de-cancer-de-bilis-y-de-pancreas-en-suramerica
